The Significance of the Equinox

All major days where there is a shift in the Sun’s apparent trajectory are power days in the year. Today the Sun rests over the equator, and begins to head northward as seen from Earth. On this day the Sun rises due east and sets due west.

Just as we mark these changes in the Sun’s trajectory from the point of view on earth, the human’s physical, psychological, and spiritual composition is also open to certain changes on these power days. The human is an electric, spiritual creature, with sophisticated subtle bodies that resonate with the geomagnetic forces that Earth is in relationship with.

Whether you are in the northern or southern hemisphere, the equinox day is a day of amplification. The earth opens to the change in its spatial relationship with the  Sun, and so does the resonance of the human heart.

On a practical level, it’s a day to revisit the goals we set around the winter solstice – around the time of the calendar new year. Are they still relevant or do they need modification? Is there some new vision that wants to be planted now?

On a psycho-spiritual level, today is a day to be intentional about the emotions we carry, as they create a vibrational baseline that resonates into the next quarter of the year through to the solstice. It’s a day to be intentional about the words we speak, because the sound vibration resounds through the internal organs, fluids, and tissues, and externally through the atmosphere around us /eternally/ — we just think that when we stop perceiving the sound, that it has ended, but it goes on. Speech is a gift to humanity from the Great Goddess, and the words we use have definite impact. Finally, especially on powerful days such as the equinoxes and solstices, we should be intentional about our thoughts, because thought is a great force that moves and creates. Our thoughts emanate from us, either  like the scent of a jasmine flower, or something less pleasant smelling.

“Thought is the greatest force on earth. Thought is the most powerful weapon in the armor of a Yogi. Constructive thought transforms, renews, and builds.” – Swami Sivananda

On a day where thought, emotion, and speech are amplified, it benefits us infinitely to practice these powerful acts of restraint to be intentional about how we use and hold these great faculties of the human.

Blessings of the Spring Equinox!
